I’m Dr. Nikka Kanani. I’m a licensed Naturopathic Doctor living in Orange County, California. I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to California before High school. I studied Public Health Sciences and completed my pre-med courses at The University of California Irvine (zot zot ;)), and then headed to Naturopathic medical school at Bastyr University in San Diego. One year before graduation, I married my best friend and first real crush after over 6 years of being together…crazy! After the wedding, I moved back to Orange County, during my last year of school. I just graduated last June, took my licensing board exams this past August, and finally received my license this past October! I can’t believe 4 years went by so fast. I feel so lucky to have received this degree and to be doing what I love and am so passionate about!
Through almost four years of graduate school, hundreds of hours of research (do blogs and youtube videos count?), planning a wedding, and my long-term struggle with my own health issues like acne and eczema, I have been able to learn so much about myself, health, wellness, beauty, life, and love. Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite thing to do is to talk about all things related to natural skin care and beauty, natural medicine, and general health and wellness. I can’t stop telling my sisters about my new skin care and makeup obsessions, or this cool tea I made that helped my headaches.
As a Naturopathic doctor, my deepest passion is using natural medicine to prevent disease and optimize health and wellness. To get super specific, my favorite things to talk about are skin and women’s health. Think acne, eczema, PMS, thyroid issues, fatigue, and all things related to digestive health. In terms of skin, I hope to share ways to heal your skin from within, reviews on my favorite skin care products, and some great DIY skin care recipes. For general health and wellness, you can expect posts related to some of the most common health conditions as I mentioned previously, and some ways to just optimize your health in general. I will also throw in some lifestyle and beauty tips. I want to show you that natural medicine can be really easy and super effective. I hope to encourage you to create time and space for self care, and self healing. Let’s lay down the foundations for good health, naturally!
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE IS A UNIQUE AND DISTINCT SYSTEM OF HEALTH CARE THAT EMPHASIZES THE USE OF PREVENTION AND NATURAL THERAPEUTICS. THE DOCTORS WHO PRACTICE NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE, CALLED NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS (NDS), ARE TRAINED TO SERVE AS PRIMARY CARE GENERAL PRACTITIONERS WHO ARE EXPERTS IN THE PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS, MANAGEMENT, AND TREATMENT OF BOTH ACUTE AND CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS.
–California Naturopathic Doctors Association
Naturopathic doctors are licensed primary care doctors, and complete their training at accredited, four-year, post-graduate naturopathic medical programs after the completion of an undergraduate degree and all pre-medical prerequisite courses. Similarly to conventional medical schools, the first two years of coursework focus on biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, pathology, and diagnosis. The third and fourth year includes comprehensive study of conventional standard of care and pharmaceuticals. However, much of the ND curriculum focuses on non-pharmaceutical/non-surgical approaches to managing patient conditions, and students spend much of their time studying preventative medicine, nutrition, lifestyle counseling, and health promotion. They also receive extensive training in botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, laboratory and clinical diagnosis, naturopathic physical medicine, and minor surgery.
Naturopathic treatments can be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions without the need for additional intervention, but Naturopathic doctors can also function in an integrated framework, and Naturopathic therapies can be used to complement treatments used by conventionally trained medical doctors. The result is a patient-centered, integrative approach that gives the patient the most appropriate treatment for their individual needs.
As a licensed Naturopathic doctor, I focus on integrative, preventative, and personalized medicine. I try to support the body’s own ability to heal itself using modalities like botanical medicine, vitamins and nutrients, dietary modifications, and lifestyle interventions before turning to pharmaceuticals. My main areas of focus are women’s health and skin conditions. I also am very interested in the prevention and management of chronic disease, and anti-aging and longevity. Most of my clinical rotations during school were focused on digestive health, autoimmune disease, women’s health, and dermatology and aesthetics. I also treat patients with a number of different health concerns such as fatigue, digestive disorders, thyroid abnormalities, anxiety and depression, stress management, autoimmune disease, headaches, and many more.
